Balmain was founded in 1945 by Pierre Balmain. From the outset, Monsieur Balmain’s boldly feminine and opulent signature style offered a startling contrast to the utilitarian looks of the day, creating a distinctive, super-feminine DNA for the house, which relied on richly embroidered fabrics, nipped-in waists and longer, often fuller skirts—and quickly transforming the Parisian house into a favorite of both European and Hollywood royalty. Balmain began his post-war career at the atelier of Lucien Lelong, where he worked alongside both Dior and Hubert de Givenchy. When he left to form his own house, success came rapidly, due in no small part to his mastery of couture techniques. Over the decades, Balmain has always proudly remained true to the trailblazing spirit of its founder. Since Pierre Balmain’s death in 1982, his house has been guided by a series of strong designers, each balancing modern offerings with the need to respect the foundations and traditions of the house. In particular, Oscar de la Renta oversaw a decade of collections in the nineties that were inspired by the colors, fluidity and elegance of Balmain’s signature “Jolie Madame” aesthetic.Today’s Balmain melds the storied heritage of a historic Parisian couture house with the bold, modern and inclusive vision of Olivier Rousteing, the house’s 35-year-old Creative Director, who is determined to design clothes that reflect the way his generation wishes to dress today. The result is a truly unique and recognizable silhouette, style and attitude that build upon the singular craftsmanship that the house’s ateliers are celebrated for, as well as the legacy of founder Pierre Balmain, a designer recognized for never having been afraid of going against the well-established conventions of his era. The first Balmain Eyewear by Akoni collection was introduced on Balmain’s Fall 2020 runways, with the inaugural eyewear designs highlighted during both the men’s and women’s Paris Fashion Weeks in the first two months of 2020. The result is a dazzling collection, season after season, a direct consequence of Akoni and Balmain’s enduring commitment to the founding principles of their partnership: a pledge to produce nothing but precision-engineered, cutting-edge designs that are crafted by Japan's most talented artisans and rely on only the finest, earth-friendly materials.
