Philipp M. Winter, born in Fürth im Wald in 1898, started his career as an export businessman, concentrating on Portugal and Spain after the First World War and in 1936 after he had already created Ski goggles with featured ventilation, but this simply comprised holes punched in the sides. In 1956 UVEX brand name, based on an abbreviation of the quality seal for lenses – Ultra Violet EXluded - and the arrise for the worlds top eyewear sports brand started, with the first antifog googles and the first ski goggles with a spherical, injection-moulded lens and anti-fog coating. In 1980, the subsidiary Alpina is founded in Derching, Bavaria by four German sports enthusiasts. Alpina quickly developed a name for themselves with their technical sports sunglasses for skiing and cycling. With hig quality production and materials on their focus, the brand had a unique behaviour and design. The “Handmade in W.Germany” stamped on the back of the frames bridge was a signature of the quality of the frames, and led Alpina to the peak of the optical industry. From the 80´s to 90´s Alpina lauched a series of frames and sunglasses collections - Alpina Talking Glasses series - these models had different motifs and themes - they were very artistic and quickly became collectors items; Alpina G-series - gold plated models that belong to the Genesis Project - very rare and sought after; Alpina Pro Car series - made for driving performance - function above all; Alpina TR-series - metal sunglasses - a men collection; Alpina Sports Series - Super Bike or PGA Golf - sport inspired models; and last but not least, the most collectible series of them all, the Alpina M series featuring the Holly Grail of vintage sunglasses models, the iconic M-1 made famous by Stevie Wonder in the 80's and still worn today by names like Kanye West, Jay-Z, Scott Storch, Snoop Dog, Rick Ross, Victoria Beckham, Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in MIAMI VICE.
